1. Define the operating model
Begin with the recovery procedure. Identify who creates the backup, who may view or move it, where it will be stored, which events should trigger recovery, and how the organization will handle personnel change. A simple plate can be appropriate when one controlled location fits policy. A multi-component format should be considered only after the organization has approved and tested a distribution method.
Write the decision in plain language. If procurement cannot explain why the chosen format exists, product complexity may be hiding an unresolved control question.
2. Translate material claims into evidence
“Metal,” “fire resistant,” and “corrosion resistant” are categories, not complete specifications. Ask for alloy or material identity, dimensions, surface finish, manufacturing route, test method, specimen configuration, exposure duration, acceptance criteria, and the report's relationship to the product being supplied.
Look for boundaries. A useful claim tells you what happened under defined conditions. It does not imply that a device survives every temperature, chemical, impact, flood, or building event.
3. Test marking and legibility
